##How to overcome writer's block ## If you’ve ever been afflicted with writer’s block, you’ll know it’s no laughing matter — it can impede your writing for days, weeks, or even months. And while it may be tempting to just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, writer's block is one of those pests that requires active extermination. Fortunately, there are several proven tactics you can use to keep your word count up and your creative juices flowing. ##What is an outline? ## A basic outline is a simple story structure that serves as a guideline for writing a novel or short story. The word "basic" here refers to simplifying the process — you’re not going to be able to use this outline for your entire novel, and if you tried, you'd end up with a book that was 75 pages too long. For this reason, outlines typically focus on the main plot points of the story, as well as bulleted scenes or even chapters that will form important parts of the story. ##The Benefits of Outlining ## Outlining doesn’t just help bring out the best in a book — it helps our writing process immeasurably. Because an outline breaks a book down into its component parts, it helps writers identify plot holes and inconsistencies before they reach the final draft stage. And it’s not just plot that outlines help us identify — for instance, an outline will tell us if our first chapter is boring, or if our hero is too passive, or too dull. An outline can help us determine whether to introduce a new character in chapter five or seven, or whether we need to introduce more conflict sooner than later. And for authors with a great story in mind, it can help us put our best foot forward with our first attempts at a draft. ##The Not-so-Goods of Outlining ## There are many, many problems that can crop up when we use outlines – too much information – the outline gives us too much information about what’s going to happen – and not enough information about how it is going to happen. Some writers feel as though they’re losing their creativity as they become more and more fixated on the idea of an outline. Many writers have been known to go so far as to rewrite sections from the outline after developing the story from those sections. ##The Outline Solution: The Three-Act Structure, and Why You Need It ## The three-act structure has been around for quite a while, but it’s still the best way to think about structuring your novel. Essentially, it divides your work into three equal acts. The first act introduces the characters, tensions are established, the basic setting is introduced, and you gradually lead up to the beginning of Act 2. Act 2 is where the main conflict comes into play – this is where you’ll want to spend most of your time. And then finally Act 3 wraps everything up in a neat little package with a satisfying end for your characters. cfa1e77820
